Physics walks with the Vice-Chancellor

Hosted by ANU Alumni Relations

Tour one: Research School of Physics building
Guided by Professor Brian P. Schmidt, ANU Vice-Chancellor and President, and Professor Tim Senden, Director of Research for Physics and Engineering.

Are you ready to discover the secrets of the universe? Then, join us for a thrilling tour of the brand new ANU Research School of Physics building!

Our state-of-the-art facility is equipped with the latest technology to explore the mysteries of the cosmos. You'll get a chance to see our cutting-edge labs, where scientists conduct ground breaking research in fields such as quantum mechanics, astrophysics, and particle physics.

But that's not all – you will be guided by Professor Tim Senden, Director of Research for Physics and Engineering, and special guest Professor Brian P. Schmidt, ANU Vice-Chancellor and President. As experts in the field, they will take you through the building's interactive exhibits, showcasing the incredible advances that ANU has made in the world of physics.

Tour two: Nuclear Physics tour
Guided by Professor Tim Senden, Director of Research for Physics and Engineering.

Alongside touring the new Research School of Physics building, you also have the special opportunity to join a Nuclear Physics tour. You will be guided by Professor Tim Senden, who will take you on a journey through the world of nuclear physics, from the smallest subatomic particles to the grandest astrophysical phenomena.

Get up close and personal with our advanced equipment, including particle accelerators and radiation detectors, and learn about the ground breaking experiments being conducted right here on campus. Discover how our research is revolutionising fields such as medicine, energy, and space exploration.

Book your tour (or tours!) today and experience the wonders of physics like never before. Please note, these are walking tours and will include multiple staircases.

Speakers

Professor Schmidt is one of Australia's most eminent scientists. Winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, alongside many other academic awards and distinctions, Professor Schmidt spent most of his academic career as an astrophysicist at the ANU Mount Stromlo Observatory and Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics before becoming ANU Vice-Chancellor and President.

Professor Senden is a graduate of ANU, completing his BSc(Hons) in Physical Chemistry in 1989 at the Research School of Chemistry, and subsequently his PhD in Atomic Force Microscopy in 1993 at the Research School of Physics and Engineering. He held positions at the College de France (Paris), Institute Charles Sadron (Strasbourg), and UNSW (ADFA) before returning to the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering in 1997, where he served as Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and as Deputy Director (Technology Development). Today, Professor Senden is the Director of the Research School of Physics and Engineering.
