Hosted by ANU College of Health and Medicine

Professor Russell Gruen, Dean of the ANU College of Health and Medicine, warmly invites you and a guest to the Tony Ayers Lecture 2023.

The lecture will be presented by this year’s Tony Ayers Award recipient, Dr Lou Farrer from the Centre for Mental Health Research, with an introductory talk by Professor Paul Smith AM, Chairman of the John James Foundation.

Light refreshments will be offered after the lecture. Guests will have a chance to meet the ANU College of Health and Medicine team and network with peers from the Canberra healthcare community.

Dr Lou Farrer is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research at The ANU. She currently holds an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) to examine how digital mental health interventions are implemented in clinical practice (2019-2024). Dr Farrer aims to use these and other data to help optimise the use of digital tools by practitioners in the Australian mental health care system. Dr Farrer's research has recently focused on the role of telehealth in mental health care.

Dr Farrer graduated with a PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2011. Her thesis examined the effectiveness of Internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy among users of Lifeline’s crisis counselling service.

The Tony Ayers Award for Excellence in Research in Translational Medicine is generously funded by the John James Foundation and recognises exceptional medical researchers at the ANU College of Health and Medicine.

The Award is named in honour of long-term John James Foundation Board member, the late Tony Ayers AC, who joined the Board in February 1998, serving for 16 years and guiding the transition of the Foundation from hospital owner through to becoming the largest medical charity in the Canberra region.

As a Federal Departmental Secretary and one of the Foundation's three non-member directors, Tony freely provided exemplary service, bringing his wise counsel and expertise in business, government, finance, and banking to the Boardroom table.

The Award takes the form of an Annual Public Lecture and will include an Award Certificate and $15,000 prize. The Public Lecture will focus on the research that has led to the award, including the translational aspects of the work.

The College of Health and Medicine at the Australian National University is grateful for the ongoing support for translational medical research provided by the John James Foundation and our shared commitment to the health and wellbeing of the Canberra community.
