As the urgency to address the impact of climate change on human health rises, so too does the need to develop solutions.
In this lecture, Dr Zoe Leviston, 2022 McMichael Award recipient, will reflect on how participating in collective efforts to address environmental decline can change not just the physical environment, but our own emotional responses and wellbeing. In particular, she will discuss the role of how humans perceive each other as an important driver of this change.
Following the lecture, the 2023 McMichael Award recipient will be officially announced by Associate Professor Aparna Lal, Director of the McMichael Award Program.

Dr Leviston applies social psychological theory to investigate how individuals, groups, and culture shape people’s responses to climate change and other environmental issues. She is especially interested in how group processes and social norms influence people’s attitudes and behaviours, and the role of collective action in ‘mainstreaming’ meaningful climate action. Before commencing with the Australian National University in 2020, Dr Leviston was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University (2017-2020), and a research scientist at the CSIRO (2004-2017). She has a PhD in Psychology from Curtin University (2013).
The McMichael Award honours the late Professor Tony McMichael, joint winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, former Director of the National Centre for Epidemiology a caused by climate change.
